The largest Conservation Futures acquisition to date, Antoine Peak consists of 1,296 acres of mountainous terrain on the northern edge of Spokane Valley. With 360-degree views from its 3,366-foot summit, Antoine Peak Conservation Area provides unique recreational opportunities, protects critical habitat for the region’s large mammals, and preserves a critical wildlife corridor that connects the Spokane River Valley with Mount Spokane State Park. There are three total trailheads providing access to Antoine Peak Conservation Area, and for this project we will meet at the Trentwood Trailhead in the Spokane Valley.
Benjamin Rooney-Sailand is the founder of ConiFriends, a community-rooted conservation group based in Spokane. After studying Environmental Science at Eastern Washington University, Benjamin joined the Washington Conservation Corps, where he developed a deep passion for forestry through hands-on fieldwork. The spark that led to ConiFriends came while helping clear a snow access road near Tonasket—where Benjamin saw an opportunity to rescue native saplings and replant them with care. What began as a few trees soon grew into two full greenhouses, and a dream to green Spokane one conifer at a time. Benjamin’s vision for ConiFriends is rooted in the belief that small actions, like planting a single tree, can leave a legacy that outlives us all.
ConiFriends is proud to partner with the Washington Trails Association and Spokane Parks & Recreation in support of a healthier, more connected environment.
Together, we work to:
Foster catalytic dialogue around environmental stewardship
Plant native species and remove invasive species
Collaborate with local school volunteer programs to build hands-on learning experiences
We believe that community action is the root of meaningful change—and we’re always eager to grow our network.
